Palominos and Cremellos
And
Buckskins and Perlinos
At this point in time, three genes are known to produce the colors that are referred to as palominos, buckskins, duns and champagnes.
Two of the genes, the dun gene and the champagne gene, behave according to the rules of simple dominance. The color is diluted only when the dominant expression of the gene is present. There is no visual difference in coat color regardless of whether the horse has one or two copies of the dominant gene.
The third gene - the cremello gene - that produces palominos and buckskins - works under a genetic rule referred to as incomplete dominance.
This means that there are three expressions that can occur from the various combinations of the dominant and recessive gene.
A horse with one copy of the dominant gene is either a palomino or a buckskin.
The base color of a horse with two copies of the dominant gene is diluted further to become either a cremello or a perlino.
There is no expression of the cremello gene when it is in the homozygous recessive form.
The major difference between incomplete dominance and simple dominance occurs when the genotype is homozygous dominant.
Remember, for genes operating under simple dominance there is no difference in the coat color of the horse regardless of whether the horse is homozygous dominant or heterozygous.
For genes operating under incomplete dominance, there is a difference in the color coat depending on whether  one or two dominant genes are present.
To help clarify this gene action, let's look at the action of the cremello gene on red, bay and black horses.
Palomino and buckskins are created through the action of the cremello gene. The genetic shorthand for this gene is Ccr, the dominant form and C, for the recessive allele. This form is difficult to format on the computer screen so for the sake of simplicity we will use CR as the notation for the dominant gene and cr as the shorthand for the recessive form of the cremello gene.
The Cremello Gene on Red
The palomino horse is a chestnut horse (ee) with one copy of the dominant CR gene. The most common image of palomino is a body the color of a newly minted penny with a silver mane and tail. In reality the body color of palominos can range from smoky gray to a yellow cream color. The manes and tails can be white or silver or a shade closer to their body color.
TIPPY TOE PLAN (AQHA)
Palomino foals are sometimes difficult to identify at birth. The easiest to spot are the ones with yellowish bodies and white manes and tails.
This filly was born a very light palomino and appears to be shedding off a chocolate palomino.
However, some palominos are born sorrels. They usually have a pink or orange hue to their coats and their manes and tails can be a shade of red. These foals shed the sorrel for a palomino color as weanlings or yearlings. Regardless of the birth color, the color of the eyelashes is a good telltale sign.  Palominos born as sorrel usually have very light, golden eyelashes.
Born a pink sand color, this filly shed off a golden palomino.
A foal that is genetically a red horse - ee  - which receives 2 copies of the dominant cremello gene -CRCR-- will be born with pink skin, blue eyes and cream colored coat.
This color is oftentimes incorrectly referred to as albino. This horse is a cremello and each one of its parents must have had at least one copy of the cremello genes.
